  • MusicNGear reviewed and rated Pearl Decade Maple Add-On Pack BB with 4.3 out 5 stars

"A compact, toneful add-on that brings maple warmth and useful versatility to an existing kit."

    4.3

Review of Pearl Decade Maple Add-On Pack BB

I put the Pearl Decade Maple Add-On Pack BB through a couple of weeks of rehearsals, a short studio check, and some tinkering at home to see whether these extra drums genuinely broaden a kit's tonal palette. I came at it as someone who plays across indie, rock, and acoustic settings and wanted an honest, playable 8" rack tom and a 14" floor tom that would sit well with my existing shells and hardware.

    First Impressions

Out of the box the satin black burst finish looked cleaner in person than I expected, and the shells had a matt lacquer that photographed nicely under stage lights - not flashy, but refined. The hardware felt solid for the price point: the included TH-900S tom holder, ADP-20 clamp, and the floor tom legs all give you everything you need to bolt these on and play right away.

    Design & Features

The construction is straightforward and purposeful - these are 100% maple shells built with Pearl's Decade/SST approach, 6-ply at about 5.4 mm, which gives a nicely balanced tone and keeps weight down. Bearing edges and interiors appear hand-treated, and Pearl fitted 1.6 mm triple-flanged hoops and Reference-style mini-lugs that look sharper than you'd expect in this price bracket.

I appreciated that Pearl includes mounting hardware - the TH-900S single tom holder plus an ADP-20 multi-clamp - and the Opti-Loc style suspension works fine once you dial in the position. Heads are Remo-specified on arrival, so you can gig or record immediately and still have a solid starting point for tuning adjustments.

    Playability & Usability

Tuning is intuitive - the 8"x7" rack tom responds quickly and gives a focused midrange snap when tuned medium-tight, and the 14"x14" floor tom produces a warm, round low end with controlled sustain when tuned lower. I found the six-lug floor tom to be very forgiving for lower tunings, which is great for rock and singer-songwriter work, though you won't coax ultra-high jazz tuning out of it without some compromise.

Mounting and repositioning are easy: the supplied clamp and holder give you adjustable placement, and the floor tom legs lock in solidly once set. If you like to hunker your floor tom a little lower for subtle groove playing, you'll find this pack adapts well.

    Real-World Experience

I used the 14" floor tom as my secondary low voice during rehearsals and took short room mics on both drums during a quick studio check - the mic'd results were true to what I heard acoustically: warm, present, and musical without sounding boxy. The 8" rack is a great spot-hit for fills and cuts through the mix nicely without needing heavy EQ, while the floor tom filled out low-mid content very naturally.

On small club gigs the added toms gave me tonal options I didn't have before and translated well to front-of-house; on the quieter acoustic stuff the 14" could be tuned down for a woody thump that sits under vocals rather than dominating them.

    The Trade-Offs

There are a few compromises you should know about - the 5.4 mm, 6-ply shell thickness gives a great all-round voice but isn't as loud or as glassy as thicker, more expensive maple shells, so if extreme projection is your primary need you might still prefer a different line. The Opti-Loc style mounting can show a little play if not tightened correctly, so expect a brief adjustment when fitting these to an older rack or non-Pearl hardware.

Also, while the included hardware is very usable, touring drummers used to beefier, heavier brackets might want to upgrade some mounting bits for heavy-handed road use - for rehearsal, recording, and light gigging it's more than adequate.

    Final Verdict

If you already own a Pearl Decade Maple kit or are looking to add a compact rack tom and a musical 14" floor tom to a mid-range shell pack, this add-on is an excellent, economical choice; it delivers the maple warmth, usable hardware, and tuning stability most players need for rehearsals, small gigs, and studio checks. I recommend it for gigging drummers upgrading from entry-level shells, home studio players who want a more polished acoustic sound, and anyone who wants quick tonal expansion without a heavy investment.

    Helpful Tips & Answers

Will these fit on a standard Pearl rack or my older Pearl stands?
Yes - in my setup the included TH-900S holder and ADP-20 clamp mounted cleanly on a standard Pearl rack after a small repositioning; older stands may need slight adjustment to bracket placement.
Are heads included or will I need to buy new ones?
Remo heads come on the shells from the factory, so I had playable heads right away - you can swap them later to taste for recording or a different attack.
How heavy are these drums to move around?
They are lighter than many older maple drums I’ve moved thanks to the 5.4 mm shells, so single-person loading for short trips was straightforward for me.
Is the finish durable for gigging?
The satin lacquer held up well through rehearsals and transport in soft cases, but I’d recommend a hard case for heavy road use to avoid dings over time.
Can the 14" floor tom be tuned low enough for rock without sounding flabby?
Yes - in my experience the 14" responds well to lower tuning and stays focused, giving a good thump without becoming uncontrolled when you tune it down for rock.
Are the hoops die-cast or triple-flanged?
Pearl ships these with 1.6 mm triple-flanged hoops - reliable and easy to work with when tuning or changing heads.
Would I notice a big difference vs higher-end maple lines?
You’ll notice refinements at the highest end - more projection and subtle harmonic complexity - but for most gigging and studio tasks these shells deliver most of the maple character at a much friendlier price.
