newdemo - Soccer Mommy

Article photo - The Underground Forest - Vol 5

I first came across Soccer Mommy during the 2020 lockdown, when I started re-listening to a lot of 90s/early 2000s music. Soccer Mommy sounds like she came from that time, but is still entirely new and unique. ‘newdemo’ is taken from her 2022 album ‘Sometimes, Forever’ - this featuring gorgeous guitar textures reminiscent of a memory (some of the guitar work reminds me of The Beatles) before melting into a lush. melancholic psychedelic bed of pads. Gentle, and truly divine in every sense.

What You Wanted - Moonchild (Kiefer Remix)

Article photo - The Underground Forest - Vol 5

Moonchild’s music has always been a place that simultaneously soothes the synapses in your mind and sparks your imagination -  this gorgeously chill remix being a perfect example of this. A milkshake of neo-soul, hard hitting drums all mixed up with gleaming vocals and an incredible bassline. If you need to be unfried - this is the song for you.

Don’t Come Back - Lava La Rue

Article photo - The Underground Forest - Vol 5

Grungey, dreamy, delightful darkness - this newest release from Lava La Rue explores a corrosive relationship. Opening with a sublimely distorted bassline and drums, before delving into a deeply smooth, slightly sinister, whispered chorus.

A breath of fresh air. Opening with vaguely uneasy piano chords and gorgeous vocals that feel like they are from a dream you had; before  diving into a beautifully textured chorus - each part flowing perfectly into the next.

dreamhotel - Jaydonclover

Article photo - The Underground Forest - Vol 5

The texture of a peach tinted luxury hotel from the 1970s. Gorgeous analog textures mixed with gentle electric pianos tones and deliciously layered vocals - ‘dreamhotel’ is a truly hypnotic affair with a nice DIY feel.  Soothes and sparkles from start to finish.

Glistening electronic that sparkles with magic, Always Been is unlike anything you have heard before. Opening with a slightly otherworldly feel, the track dives into a phantasmagoric, glittering chorus with deliciously smooth drums.

dune - Planet 1999

Article photo - The Underground Forest - Vol 5

I became an instant fan of Planet 1999 when I came across ‘crush’ - and have been obsessed with all of their releases since then. ‘dune’ is a dreamy, slightly mystical song with silky vocals, all blending together into a chorus that features some seriously solid drum programming. Flawless.

Nabelschnurtanz -Kenji Araki

Article photo - The Underground Forest - Vol 5

A truly dark and glorious web of industrial, haunting and distorted textures ( initially slightly reminding me of Purity Ring, Pendulum and NERO, in terms of the raw, earth shattering power of the sound design and electronics) This hits hard, and is truly magnificent. Taken from the artist’s 2022 album Leidenzwang which you can listen to here.
