The Underground Forest - Vol 3
Some of the very best alternative releases for our ongoing series The Underground Forest - escape and explore other landscapes and dimensions in your mind.
Featuring nimf, Berry Galazka, Greentea Peng, DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ, Mallrat, SOARER, Soccer Mommy and マドロスMERCURY
nimf - A Ballad for Looking into Time
Become swept into the magical forest-like landscape of A Ballad for Looking into Time.
Sit around the campfire in this fantasy landscape, while gentle, folk anthems are hummed and sang. A lute gently comes in; and you ease into your lush surroundings. However, the ambience and music slowly become more and more surreal; and you realize you have entered a portal to an ancient world of otherworldly creatures, one you thought only existed in folklore and fairytales; and a deep sense of eerie unease sets in.
A Ballad for Looking into Time is the first piece in NIMF's new project: The Oneiricological Sireonscape; Oneiric meaning dream-like and dream-states, and sirenoscape meaning the mythological siren tied with a soundscape.
Berry Galazka - Dream Caused By The Flight of A Bee
Berry Galazka is back; and more glorious than ever. We open with a furious wall of punk guitar textures; before gliding into a smooth beat with Galazka’s impeccable flow, before ascending back into punk influenced chorus with a flawless, hypnotic hook.
DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - Under Your Spell
A lush, magical bed of 90s and early 2000s culture; in music form. Treat your mind and your ears, sit back and revisit the worlds of your childhood favorites.
Mallrat - To You
To You is the newest release from the Australian artist; and it is gorgeous.
It opens with a chorus of reverb soaked vocals; before a warm, hazy electronic bed of instruments come in, on top of which a haunting vocal line glides; rising into a divinely dreamy chorus that brings to mind the likes of Tame Impala.
SOARER - untitled intro
There is nothing I prefer more than searching Bandcamp for new electronic/post-internet/mallsoft releases; as I see them as a form of virtual reality exploitation in audio form. ‘untitled intro’ is taken from the Peru based artist’s album ‘the essence of our existence’; it is surreal, dreamlike and thoroughly immersive.
Soccer Mommy - Shotgun
I first discovered Soccer Mommy during lockdown; the first song of hers I came across being 2018’s ‘cool’; and the alt 90s feel resulted in me instantly becoming a fan. Shotgun opens with 90s rock laden textures, before entering a gorgeous chorus, sprinkled with a wall of glistening vocals that sound like they could be from a memory.
マドロスMERCURY - 100 Reasons
A deeply hypnotic meld of lofi vaporwave electronic perfection. Flawless.
Greentea Peng - Your Mind
Greentea Peng is another artist I came across during lockdown when the kaleidoscopic visual delight that is the music video for Nah It Ain’t The Same was recommended to me on Youtube. Your Mind opens with celestial, heavenly textures; featuring glittering harps and a chorus of vocals, before entering into a grunge influenced verse, featuring soulful strings soaring over the gorgeous vocal harmonies.
