This week's edition features: a song that sounds like the artist recorded it to cassette tape on their bedroom floor under a star filled night sky in the 1990s; a song from a brit-pop star who feels like a character from one of Richard Ayoade's books, and/or a highly misfortunate friend of Mark Corrigan’s (from Peep Show); a song from Sabrina Spellman’s leatherbound bejeweled spellbook; a song for going feral at a rave in warehouse; a smooth alt-pop song that has a glamorous night time vibe to it; a bewitchingly strange song about fairytales; a song that will make you feel like you are in a dank, neon lit internet cafe in the neo-noir worlds of The Matrix or Hackers; and more!

I Urinated on a Butterfly - Jim E. Brown

I have been finishing up working on a parody-adjacent music project over the last year (inspired by Garth Marenghi and 1990s computer/internet informational videos); and recently I was recommended ‘I'm About to Fall Over in ASDA’ on Youtube, by artist Jim E.Brown, which then led me to the wonderful world of ‘I Urinated on a Butterfly’. This mysterious figure is a 19-year-old pop star/poet/activist, who feels like he is a character from a Richard Ayoade book, or perhaps a highly misfortunate friend of Mark Corrigan from Peep Show. The video features the pop star in a state of complete misery in a field after realizing that he urinated on a butterfly, featuring lyrics such as “I got his little wings/ So wet/ They probably don't work anymore/It makes me upset”. If I could submit this single for a 2026 Grammy nomination, I would.

Red Hair Dye - Leilani Patao

Taken from the artist’s debut EP ‘daisy’, which you can order here

I really like it when a song, once produced, mixed and mastered, still retains the inherent warmth and creativity of the artist; a key ingredient that Leilani Patao maintains throughout their EP; and a life force that is ever present in ‘Red Hair Dye’.

This feels like the artist recorded the song to cassette tape, on their bedroom floor on a Friday night in the 1990s, under an endless star filled night sky. ‘Red Hair Dye’ is a blast of warm nostalgia, the guitars a hazy, dreamy blend of indie-rock and shoegaze, the vocals melancholic and entrancing.

DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ is back with her leatherbound, bejeweled spellbook to entrance you and keep you warm for the winter months. ‘Not There Yet’ is a blast of warm electronic house music that will induce the unbridled euphoria that only the very best of electronic music can. This features the artist's signature mashup style, flavored with glittering, witchy textures. Prepare yourself for a magical evening of listening.

Burn - Street Fever

Taken from 'Inhale Vol. I’, a compilation album that celebrates the launch of Breathing Records; this song feels like going completely feral in an abandoned warehouse rave in a dank shipping district on a Friday night, and it is absolutely glorious. If you have pent up energy you need to purge, put this on and let loose.

On the single, the artist confides, “Burn” pushes me to the limit when I perform it live behind the decks at raves, which is where I wrote it to be played. I was DJing warehouse parties across Los Angeles a lot which heavily inspired its creation. The tempo change and buildup in the song is a play on the increasing heart rate I experience when performing live."

LEARNING TO LET GO - Lights

I first came across Lights on Instagram in 2018, with the release of her graphic novel ‘Skin & Earth’ (which accompanied her album of the same name); the comic being written and drawn by the artist, this unbridled creativity immediately drawing me in. This new single is taken from the upcoming album ‘A6EXTENDED’ (set for release in January), a project that is entirely written and produced by the artist.

‘Learning To Let Go’ opens with a rich bed of electronic textures, with crystalline synths shimmering in the background, the chorus being a fun blend of DIY alt-pop with a glamorously smooth night time vibe to it all.

Fairy Tales - Ana Luna

Taken from the singer/songwriter's debut album Tainted Silhouettes; this opens with celestial, fairytale-like vocals that make you feel like you are being enticed into a magical forest. A piano enters alongside deep, haunting vocals; the results being a soundscape that is bewitchingly strange, very much like the worlds of the best fairytales.

Knives of Silence - Jay Wires

Article photo - A Night Walk in The Underground Forest - November 2025

NYC electronic artist Jay Wires is back and better than ever with this new release; the bridge featuring industrial, uneasy synths that hammer home the emotional distress of being subject to the behavior described in the lyrics. The instrumental is all-consuming, the lyrics direct, this could help someone who is experiencing this kind of behavior feel less alone, and retain their sanity.

Apple Pie - Harmony

This is hauntingly beautiful, with vocals that kind of remind me of Charli XCX. This has some mournful 1990s vibes, the song playing out over a luxurious yet controlled soundscape. The lyrics “That's the kind of girl you're gonna make sure is your wife/She won’t hold you to a standard just the way you like” is a gut punch. The music video is sublime - and makes the song hit even harder

Mesa - Aran Sheehy

This new release from Dublin-based artist/composer Aran Sheehy features eerie 1990s textures with some drum and bass. The soundscape feels like it is a signal travelling through the motherboard of a computer, making you feel like you are in a dank, neon-lit internet cafe in the neo-noir worlds of The Matrix or Hackers.
