The Metal Inferno - Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal

When we examine the history of heavy metal, we see pioneers such as Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin. Their electrifying guitar riffs and double-bass drum beats created a brand-new sound. Modern Metal has the ability to be louder due to the mixing and mastering process. The riffs can now be sonically lower because 7-string guitars have the ability to play in dropped tunings.

I categorize Heavy Metal mainly by its raw aggression, Progressive metal for its odd times, and technical mastery. For me, Power metal usually has a singer who can effortlessly sing in the highest of registers. Check out these new releases:

Primal Fear - I am the Primal Fear

This is a great Power metal track. Its distorted guitar tone never gets in the way of the vocals. The singer is pitch-perfect and reaches notes in the Soprano register with ease. It is very reminiscent of Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. A constant pushing bassline and sparse double bass drum beats make this a great road trip song.

Helstar - The Devil's Masquerade

This song has a drum intro that all metal drummers should aspire to! The fills and double bass beats are so incredibly precise that they could only be performed with thousands of hours of practice. The guitar riff is doubled and has a melody played over the top to create a heavy wall of sound. A guitar solo after the second chorus keeps to the true form of a Metal song.

Bad Omens - Specter

This track starts with a melancholy piano melody. This helps the song really build before the drums kick in. At first, it seems like it is a progressive metal song in odd time. It is actually triplets played in 6/8 time signature. The vocal harmonies are heavily layered, which helps give the song emotion.

KEYAN & Connor Kaminski - Swell

This progressive track has all the key ingredients of a great song. The guitarist has a high level of technical wizardry over his instrument. This is more impressive because he is playing a 7-string guitar! This helps widen the sonic range.

The drums are in full double bass assault mode. Playing unison parts with the guitar shows an incredibly high level of musicianship.

In Mourning - Song of the Cranes

This is an interesting song because it has elements of metalcore with the singer's trashy vocals. I felt the melodic guitar lines were what helped it fit into the Metal category. The drummer plays polyrhythms on the bass drums during the chorus, which is incredibly hard to do. It's important to wait for the breakdown section near the end of the song, as it shows musicians who can play at all dynamic levels. The melody on the guitar is also really well mixed.

I Prevail - Annihilate Me

This song starts out with a simple, mellow guitar riff. The slower tempo fools you into thinking it will be a laid-back track. This is not the case as soon as the drums come in. The guitars are tuned down, which sounds like dropped D tuning. The singer possesses some serious vocal chops. From melodies in the higher register to full-on metal screeching towards the end of the song.

Centuries of Decay - Cauterize

This song opens with some hand percussion before having the guitar and bass playing an extended riff in unison. The up and down picking on the guitar at a fast tempo is very reminiscent of Pantera and Iron Maiden. The drummer is phenomenal, going from double time to half time to 16th triplets on the bass drum. All of this, added with the singer's grunt, makes it a great example of power and progressive Metal.

Philosophobia - The Forgotten Part I

There is a lot of interplay between the drummer and guitarist in the song's intro. They hit many accents together while managing to play fills in between. This is an epic song with great changes that goes for over 8 minutes. It starts heavy but has an acoustic guitar part during the breakdown. The guitar plays arpeggios and pentatonic scales at lightning-fast speed during the solo. The singer's range is impressive as he hits notes over multiple octaves.

Echoes of Gloom - Wanderer of the Mind's Eternal Storm

This track starts off with a long, distorted guitar intro. The parts are doubled, giving it a thick sound sonically. The drums enter with a classic 16th note double bass drum pattern. This gives a great foundation for the singer to really put some low-end vocals over.

The song builds in intensity, going into some full-on blast beats. Although there is a nice mellow bridge with solo guitar with a heavy flanger effect, which changes the mood to sombre.

Green Carnation - In Your Paradise

This song has a great power metal intro. The drums play a counter rhythm to the which gives it a poly rhythmic feel. The singer has no problem hitting high notes in the upper register. A classic songwriting staple for this type of music is the guitar to double the vocal melody in the chorus. This gives an extremely layered sound, which helps evoke emotion from the listener.
