The Metal Inferno - Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal

Heavy Metal still carries that raw aggression that first drew us in, while Progressive Metal challenges the mind with complex rhythms and musicianship that borders on the otherworldly.

Power Metal, on the other hand, soars above it all - with soaring vocals, blazing solos, and lyrics that make you feel invincible. This month's selection captures all those elements. From the epic and melodic to the dark and technical.

So plug in, turn it up, and let October’s new wave of metal set your speakers on fire. Check out these killer new releases:

Tipping Point - Megadeth

It's hard to go wrong with Heavy Metal pioneers Megadeth! I like how trends in the music business for the last 30 years had no impact on the band's sound. This track starts with a classic Metal guitar riff followed by thunderous drums. Spurs of double bass weave in and out of Dave Mustaine's powerful vocals. Amazing production on this track!

Meant to Be - Testament

Although a lot of the time, people would refer to Testament as Thrash, this track feels like straight-ahead metal. It starts off mellow on acoustic guitar. I like Metal tracks that do this because of really gives you a chance to hear the singers vocals. It gets heavy towards the bridge and comes in with a classic heavy riff near the end of the song.

Sepsis - Lamb of God

This song starts with guitar feedback before going into a unison riff with the bass player. They are both detuned for extra bone-crunching heaviness. The drummer plays a half-time beat for the majority of the song. The track shifts into an aggressive 2/4 double-time beat towards the end of the song. Although the song is only 3 minutes long, it still captures the classic Lamb of God sound.

RUN THROUGH THE NIGHT - THE UNCROWNED

This power metal song really allows all members of the band to shine. The singer has a chance to really nail notes in the high register. The backing vocals also give dimension to the song. The drummer changes quickly between straight and double time with blazing fills around the drums. This track also has an incredible guitar solo.

The Descendant - Aeternia

This track starts with a drum intro. In my opinion, it is the hardest feel for a metal band to pull off, as it is based on triplets. This rhythm is the same as the classic metal track 'For Whom the Bells Toll' by Metallica. Aeternia are all incredible musicians.

The singer's soprano register is perfect for this power metal song. The use of harmonies shows artists with a great understanding of music theory. All this, with added distorted guitars, makes it an excellent song.

Ancestral War - Arcane Tales

You have to listen to this song for how incredibly fast and precise the musicians can play! It is incredibly impressive because many of the parts are played in unison. The drummer is on fire with complex double bass beats while the guitars play in harmony. A great power metal track.

Gustav Vasa - Nils Patrik Johansson

This song has a rawness to the production, which gives it weight. The vocals are really at the front of the mix, which is great, as you can clearly hear the lyrics. The classic double time double bass drum pattern is a staple of Heavy Metal. The singer's octave range is what separates this band from the competition.

Winds of Time - Wings of Steel

This track goes for over 10 minutes! This really allows the musicians to stretch and have many sections of the song. It starts with classic metal double guitars with occasional drum accents. Once the beat kicks in, it plays hard until the breakdown 5 minutes into the song. The vocalist's skill is remarkable, changing registers and from head to chest voice with ease.

Stronghold - Human Fortress

This is a cross between heavy and power metal. The detuned guitars give the song a lot of bottom end, which adds to the heaviness. The guitar parts that play in unison and harmony create a thick layer of melodies. The singer's vocals are high in the mix but not to the detriment of the other instruments.

Shorter than most metal songs but long enough to say what needed to be said.

Ramming Speed - Sintage

This song starts with a distorted guitar riff while the drummer plays accents on the floor tom. The double-time beat pushes the song forward. Constant palm muted strokes on the guitar playing a quick 16th note rhythm conjure images of early Iron Maiden. The production is super raw, although this helps capture the energy.
