This month, I'd like to look at a fresh wave of Heavy Metal releases. From the timeless power and raw energy of traditional Heavy Metal to the soaring melodies and epic storytelling of Power Metal, and the ambitious, ever-evolving soundscapes of Progressive Metal. Once again, I'm amazed by the number of talented independent artists and bands creating passionate, ambitious, and high-quality records, proving that some of the most exciting metal can often be found far beyond the reach of the mainstream.

From Sand To Stardust - Carving Stone From Space
This band is made up of incredibly schooled musicians! They got through odd time signatures and metric modulations like a hot knife through butter. Sometimes bands play odd time signatures for the sake of it. That is not the case in this situation. The melody is always put first, and it is hard sometimes to figure out if a section is in an odd meter. The drummer is a beat-playing complex arrangements with ease. The guitar and bass player are also incredibly talented, playing difficult riffs in unison.

Holy Dragons - Gods, Demons, Saints
This song sounds like classic Heavy Metal. The drummer plays a fast double-time beat for the majority of the song, adding flourishes on the double bass when changing sections. The singer's aggressiveness comes through immediately, drawing attention to the song’s main melody. There is a great guitar solo at the 3-minute and 30-second mark, featuring doubled guitar parts and sweep picking. A cool track!

Coffin Hunters - Cosmic Dawn
This song sounds like classic Heavy Metal, Power Metal and Progressive. The singer has some incredible chops, staying in the high upper register for the majority of the song. The bass player and drummer lock in tight to create a heavy groove. The guitarist plays a ripping solo at the 4-minute mark with a lot of melodic licks accompanied by the perfect amount of shredding.

Tyrant - Emergo
This is a great modern Heavy Metal track. The drummer is incredible, playing full-on double bass beats throughout the entire song. I like how the doubled guitar parts are high in the mix but not overpowering. The singer does great in both the higher and lower registers. This is a cool track. Check out the gnarly guitar solo at the 2-minute mark.

Fimbul Winter - When The Sun Comes Out At Night
This track mixes Heavy Metal and metalcore. It starts with a full-on double bass assault in half-time. The unison guitars create a thick wall of sound with their bone-crunching riffs. It sounds to me like the tuning is in dropped D for added low end. The singer's low growl is aggressive in this Metal anthem.

Aletheya - Chasing The Sun
The drummer on this Power Metal song is an absolute BEAST! His double bass drumming is flawless, and drum fills are impeccable. The vocalist delivers a performance in the upper high register that is full of soul and emotion.
The intro reminds me of early Iron Maiden with the syncopated guitar riff. The guitar solo at the 3 minute 45 mark is incredibly technical and melodic simultaneously. A great bunch of musicians.

Signum Regis - Echoes of Glory
This Power Metal track starts with an instantly memorable guitar riff. It is the perfect mix of distortion and reverb. I like the rhythm guitar parts during the verse as they really lay down the groove. The drummer has a great pocket, playing beats that are busy but always add to the song. The singer has great chops; the backing vocals also add to the dynamics of the song.

Novareign - Shifting the Axis of the World
It is easy to tell that the musicians who created this Metal/Power Metal song have practiced thousands of hours on their instruments. The song starts with a guitar riff that sounds polyrhythmic when played in unison by the whole band. It then shifts into an unexpected but cool triplet rhythm. This song goes for over 8 minutes and lets each member of the band show their talents. This is a great track.

Hook & Lace - Unblossoming
This track really defies categorisation! It has elements of Heavy Metal in the chorus, Metalcore vocals, and Prog guitar riffs. The most unusual thing is the song's intro, which is almost a minute long. It builds slowly with a clean guitar, keyboards, and a drummer playing a crosstick rhythm that is almost Latin. This song is strange but super cool at the same time!

CUS - Desecrate the Memory
This Prog Metal track has amazing production. The drum sound is incredible! The heavy, detuned guitars can be heard perfectly with no muddiness in the sound. Multiple riffs are cool enough to start a riot or at least slam into someone you don’t like in a mosh pit. The singer is full of aggression and a great band leader. Wait for the 5-minute mark of the song where it changes gears and goes into a heavy triplet groove. Very cool!

Magesh is a musician and producer who has worked with Rihanna, Lionel Richie, Ricky Martin, Chris Brown, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, and Vernon Reid of Living Colour.
He released an instructional drumming DVD called "Unique Beats" where he mixed the drum kit with electronics and Indian hand percussion. He recently moved from Australia to the UK to explore new musical opportunities.
