Once again, I'm diving into three pillars of the genre: Heavy Metal, bringing thunderous riffs and unrelenting force; Progressive Metal, challenging conventions with intricate rhythms and bold innovation and Power Metal, charging forward with soaring melodies, mythic themes, and unstoppable momentum.

January's releases set the tone for 2026 - ambitious, commanding, and brimming with metal spirit.

Irreversible Mechanism - Nocturnal Light

Taken from the album Graviant, this is a cool Metal song at a slow tempo. The drum sound is incredible, and the mix is incredibly clear. The band takes their time building the song, which is just over 7 minutes long. The guitar player uses both reverb and chorus pedals, which really showcase the band's use of dynamics.

Excellent vocals with just the right amount of harmonies.

Black Usurper - Echoes From Beneath

The title track from Echoes From Beneath, this mixes Heavy Metal, Power Metal and Thrash. It is an epic piece of music, almost 14 minutes long. I like Metal songs at slow tempos because the nuance of every note is heard. Especially the guitar and drums. This song moves through many moods and emotions. A great track.

ASCALAPHA - A Raven's Curse

Taken from Shadow Under A Raven's Wing, this is a mix of Metal and Thrash. It has a super mellow opening, which really lets you hear how talented the guitar player is. It's rare to hear a clean sound in a metal song; it also sounds like there is a doubled acoustic part in the song's intro. Growling vocals and incredibly precise double bass drumming make this a very cool track.

Hyperion - Deafening

From the album Cybergenesis, this song has all the staples of a classic Power Metal song. Unison lines played by the guitar and bass. Double time double bass drumming and soprano register vocals with a lot of vibrato. This song showcases the incredible talents of all the musicians in this band. Amazing!

Exxûl - Walls Of Endless Darkness

From the album Sealed Into None, this Power Metal song has an incredible vocalist! His ability to go from head voice to chest voice in the upper register is very impressive. The musicians also play at a very high level; this is evident in the song's complex arrangements. I like the fact that this song goes through many dynamic changes before the climax at the end.

Force Carrier - Nucleonic Confinement

From the EP Intranuclear, this progressive Metal track is a little left of centre. It sounds like the Bass Player is running his rig through some sort of envelope filter. The drummer is playing blast beats at breakneck speed. This song has many accents where the band plays in unison, which are incredibly tight. This song is unusual but very cool at the same time.

The Eternal - Celestial Veil

Taken from Celestial, this Power Metal song has a half-time feel. The acoustic guitar doubles several parts of the intro, which shows the band's ability to navigate through different feels. The singer has an incredible multi-octave range, which he gets to use through the chorus. There is a blistering guitar solo which is flawless just after the 4-minute mark.

Impermanence - Kielyr

From the EP Impermanence, this instrumental leans towards progressive metal due to its complex time changes and polyrhythms. There are multiple feel changes throughout the song, which show the writer's ability to understand chord structure. The drummer plays a lot of fast 16th note fills that help create tension in the verses.

Kalyptra - Enigma

From their latest album, this Prog Metal track is interesting due to its use of keyboard pads. This gives the song more scope. It really gets taken up a notch when the heavy guitars kick in. The production is slick but never sounds overproduced. The drummer has an incredible groove.

Bimurta Metal - The Immortal

Taken from All skies lead to the sun; The Immortal has some very eclectic influences. It has acoustic guitars and exotic percussion. The distorted guitar near the end of the song has an almost Black Sabbath tone to it. Most of the song is in 6/8 timing, which is unusual for a Metal song. The drummer really gets to play in the double-time bridge section.
