This month, I'm looking at a fresh wave of Heavy Metal releases, uncovering the artists and bands keeping the genre exciting and unpredictable. From the thunderous riffs and raw power of Heavy Metal to the soaring melodies and epic ambition of Power Metal, and the intricate arrangements and adventurous soundscapes of Progressive Metal, August 2026 has delivered plenty for metal fans to discover.
What continues to amaze me is the sheer quality coming from independent artists and lesser-known bands, proving that you don't need a huge following or a major record label to create music that is powerful, ambitious, and truly worthy of being heard.

The Metal Inferno - Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal
Arenas del Tiempo - Batalla de los Ríos
This track starts with a driving tom-tom beat that sets the song’s tone. The doubled guitar part starts in unison and quickly becomes a harmony part. This is a classic songwriting device for Power Metal. Although the lyrics are not in English, they are delivered with tons of emotion. Wait till the end of the song, when it builds with the drummer playing a double-bass assault.

UPDATE - Feel Me BURN
This Rock/Modern Metal track starts with a cool guitar riff using minor chords. The song builds a few bars in with the drummer playing a heavy groove. The work he does on the hi-hats during the verse is very impressive. The vocal has no problem at all hitting notes in the upper octaves, which lends an element of Power Metal. The heavy guitars are played perfectly in unison.

Dualisis - Us
This is a cool track from Modern/Progressive metal ‘Dualisis’. The song starts with what sounds like an acoustic steel-string guitar. It is a unique intro with the vocalist almost doing spoken word over the top. The feel gets heavy quickly with the bass player and drummer laying down a super heavy groove. The musicians are very talented, navigating through double-time and half-time changes in a song that is over 6 minutes long.

Maidenhead - Maximum Clonage
The drummer on this Modern/Thrash Metal track is outstanding! The double-bass groove propels the song forward from the start and goes into a cool triplet pattern after the bridge. The vocals are full of aggression but mixed nicely so you can clearly hear the lyrics. There is a great guitar lead break full of shredding at the 22-second mark.

Pronoias - We Are The Same ft. Nitte Valo
This is a very interesting Power Metal tune. It has a lot of conventions of this genre, including double bass drums, doubled guitar parts in harmony, and excellent vocals in the upper register. The bridge section is unusual in the best possible way! There is what sounds like a fiddle or violin that plays the dominant melody while the band changes the groove into a triplet pattern. This is a cool song!

Domic - Messenger Of The Last Words
This track sounds like a classic Heavy Metal song. It reminded me of early Motörhead. The drums start with a double-time beat, adding flourishes of double bass. It is a cool opening guitar riff which sounds like it is in dropped D tuning for maximum heaviness. There is great chemistry between the musicians, which is something that can only come from constant rehearsing, touring, and studio sessions. The vocalist is outstanding, maneuvering through high and low registers like a hot knife through butter.

Giant Skunk - Atlas 5-9
This Heavy/Hard rock tune starts with a heavy guitar riff and drum groove. The bass guitar is mixed nicely to make you feel the song’s low end. The singer has an intensity that creates aggression when needed. There is a cool guitar solo at 2 minutes and seven seconds. I’m still trying to work out what guitar pedal is used on the lead break. It almost sounds like a theremin or envelope filter. A cool, heavy track!

IRONFLAME - Worlds to Conquer
More people should know this band simply for the singer’s incredible chops! He spends the whole song in the upper register, hitting notes usually reserved for falsetto from male singers. I like this track because it is in 6/8 time. The doubled guitars are a nice touch but never get in the way of the melody. There is a time change at the 4 minute twenty second mark where the band changes into a shuffle feel. A great song by a group of very talented musicians. Check out this band!

Coven Japan - Samurai Rising
This is a great classic Heavy Metal track from Japan. It gives me Iron Maiden vibes with its unison guitar harmonies and soprano singing. The song has a cool implied shuffle groove which is hard to pull off. The bass playing is understated but creates a groove for the whole band to feed off.
The song is over 5 minutes long and builds slowly.

Occult Master - Heavy Metal Madness
This classic heavy metal tune has stripped-back production. The band is tight, playing many unison hits when changing sections. The guitar tone is a great mix of overdrive and distortion. The drummer and bassist are tight, laying down a solid groove. This band creates a full sound for the number of musicians in the band.

Magesh is a musician and producer who has worked with Rihanna, Lionel Richie, Ricky Martin, Chris Brown, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, and Vernon Reid of Living Colour.
He released an instructional drumming DVD called "Unique Beats" where he mixed the drum kit with electronics and Indian hand percussion. He recently moved from Australia to the UK to explore new musical opportunities.
