The Hip Hop Manifesto - February 2026
Boom Bap grit, jazz-laced flows, and conscious bars shaping the sound of February's underground hip hop.
Featuring Jay-Sim, Gio 22/6, RUFUS, Gyo, Bub Rock, Hus KingPin, Inspectah Deck, G Slide, Bally Baby, AVENUEBLVD, Grubby Pawz, ARI 7, DeevoDaGenius, Kil The Artist, BLUEHILLBILL, Conway the Machine, Fantastic Sound, Stik Figa, Vic Spencer, Rigs, Benny The Butcher.

I always loved Hip hop for its ability to speak truth, and the artists leading the way in February 2026 prove that substance still outweighs spectacle.
From dusty Boom Bap that feels lifted off worn vinyl to Jazz rap soaked in late-night soul, from fearless Alternative cuts to Conscious records that challenge comfort zones, this month isn’t chasing trends. It’s building a legacy.
These are songs crafted with intent, layered with meaning, and delivered with conviction. I feel the common denominator for all these new songs is that they speak the artist's truth.
The Hip-Hop Manifesto - Boom Bap, Conscious, Jazz Rap, Alternative
Jay-Sim - If You Love Me
This track is a mash-up of Boom Bap and Hip Hop. The beat is sporadic, implying a double time and sometimes a halftime feel. The handclaps are classic Boom Bap. If you listen closely, you can hear a triangle is played in the percussion groove, which I think adds nice contrast. The keyboard/pad sound is also very Hip Hop.

Gio 22/6 - Hopeless
This laid-back track captures Boom Bap sounds mixed with conscious rap's emotional lyrics. I like how the drum groove is sporadic and drops out regularly. This allows the lyrics and vocal melody to really be heard. The synth pad is continuous through the track, which gives the track momentum.

RUFUS, Gyo - O MAIS REAL
This mid-tempo track has elements of hip hop and slight jazz rap. The opening sequence has chords played in arpeggios very similar to what real jazz musicians play. Some of the chord voicings also remind me of old school jazz. This song has a modern hip-hop beat and very stripped-back production, which works for the genre.

Bub Rock - HEARTBREAK HOTEL STAFF MEETING
This hip hop track has elements of alternative and jazz. The main piano part, which the song is based on, is run through a cool pitch shifter, which creates an old school hip hop effect. The bass is at a low rumble, giving the song extra bottom end. The slower tempo suits the song’s feel, which has autobiographical lyrics.

Hus KingPin, Inspectah Deck - Next Level
This alternate hip hop track has a multitude of influences. The programmed drum beat is classic 90s Hip hop. I like the added hand percussion; congas always add an element of a live band and make the track feel more organic. There is a synth pad that almost sounds like a theremin, which gives off sinister/spooky vibes. A very cool track!

G Slide, Bally Baby - McDonald's
The drum programming has elements of new school and Boom Bap. The quick 32nd notes on the hi hat create tension throughout the song. There are 2 rappers who alternate bars but never get in the way of each other's rhymes. The keyboard riff repeats throughout the song to create an almost hypnotic beat.

AVENUEBLVD, Grubby Pawz, ARI 7 - Mind Get Away
This track is alternative hip hop with elements of jazz rap. It has a cool chord progression on what sounds like a Fender Rhodes keyboard. The production is stripped back but captures all the low end perfectly. The Rappers have a ‘conversational’ flow while they rap over a half-time shuffle beat. Very Cool!

DeevoDaGenius, Kil The Artist, BLUEHILLBILL, Conway the Machine - QUARTER ZIP
This song is heavily influenced by alternative hip hop and jazz rap. The sample of the double bass guitar is what the song’s groove is built upon. The flourishes of the flute are a throwback to 70’s jazz and funk music. The rapper has a slow drawl style, which reminded me of Hip Hop legend ODB.

Fantastic Sound, Stik Figa, Vic Spencer - Til The World Ends
This song has almost cinematic vibes mixed with hip hop. The horns are borrowed from jazz, while the quick staccato stabs are a throwback to funk. The choice of instrumentation is similar to Funk Legend Curtis Mayfields ‘superfly’ album. There is a constand roning note on a horn which gives it an eerie feel.

Rigs, Benny The Butcher - UNY
This is a great conscious hip hop track! I like listening to someone who rhymes and is full of emotion. That raw energy is captured on this track. There is an interesting string melody which runs throughout the track, which also elicits an emotion of sadness. A very cool track!
