I want to look at 10 independent artists who are bringing the funk. It can be laced with soul and RNB also. To me, Funk was built on deep-pocket basslines, crisp drum breaks, and riffs that refuse to sit still; the groove remains the heartbeat.

The independent artists featured this month each channel that pulses in their own signature way. Some lean into stripped-back, rhythm-forward minimalism; others layer shimmering synths, bold horn stabs, and vocals dripping with soul.

As the old saying goes, 'You can't fake the funk!'

Here Come The Mummies - DTF

This is an incredibly funky track. If not for the super slick production, you might think it was recorded in the 1970’s. You can clearly hear the James Brown/Tower of Power influence, but this band still has its own sound. The staccato horn stabs and syncopated drum groove really drive home the funk.

This is a great track!

Misha, BeMyFiasco - Back To Myself

Article photo - Groove Radar: Funky Picks of the Month - February 2026

This is a really beautiful song! It opens with a super funky programmed drum beat that has all the feel of a real drummer. The vocalist delivers the lyrics that are draped in soul. The guitar part is super simple, but the funky/jazzy chord progression is really what the song's melody is based on.

An excellent song by an ensemble of very talented musicians.

THUNDERBOY - Funk Goddess

This song sounds like it would fit right at home on a 1980s compilation alongside Funk Masters like Prince and Cameo. It is synth-heavy, with sounds sounding like they came straight off an old school Roland Juno keyboard. The vocalist has nice control of his falsetto, and this adds to the song's funkiness.  The drum beat is designed to help keep the party moving.

JoJo Scott - LoverGirl

This is an awesome old school laid back funk/soul track. The singer has a beautiful tone, and the vocal harmonies are very clever. The drum beat has a slight swing to it, making it feel authentically funky. It showcases excellent songwriting skills with simple but highly effective production.

Misha Angèle - Lovers/Friends?

I like this track for multiple reasons. The vocal harmonies are classic RnB but the beat has a New Jack Swing feel. Although this shifts to a straight 16th note feel towards the end of the song. The keyboard riff gives Motown vibes while being written in a major key, which is what makes the song uplifting.

Luna Avanue - CLOSER TO YOU

This slow-tempo funk/RnB jam is perfect if you are in the mood for chilling out! I like the drum groove as it is multi-layered with a cool off-beat open hi hat part. There are lush vocal harmonies that really give the song depth. The stripped-back production is also refreshing when most music is overproduced these days.

Kibbi Gibbon - Circuits

This is a super funky tune which has Geroge Benson inspired funk/jazz guitar riffs. The synths are high on the mix, but they are never overpowering. The drum groove is sparse and hits the hi hat off-beat accents very precisely. This creates a cool effect with the bass part.

There are even some nice fusion chords in the progression in the bridge.

Saucy Lady, Slynk - Love Telepathy

This track will instantly make you feel good!  The bass is so low and sounds like there is synth ass on top of it.  This is reminiscent of legendary Funk Bassist ‘Bootsy Collins’.  The synths really help the song move and accent the melody.  The vocal part is catchy and easy to sing along with.  I hope this becomes a favourite on everyone’s playlist!

Los Roger's - Chabuca

I like this track for its rawness. It has super stripped-back production. The guitar sound sounds like it is run through a 1960’s fender transister amplifier. The rhythm is broken up and disjointed, which creates a funky sound popular in the 1960’s. This song is a little off beat but funky nonetheless!

This Funk/RnB track really delivers. It’s emotional lyrics sung by a vocalist who really knows how to get the most out of a melody. The harmonies are stacked close together, giving the song a really full sound. The live guitar is a nice touch, even bringing a slightly jazzier feeling to the track.
