General Overview

The PSR-SX900 is an amazing keyboard for intermediate or professional musicians. It has the ability to sample. Loop and connect via Bluetooth making it great for both the studio and live performances. Its realistic keyboard sounds make it perfect for pop, funk, and neo-soul music. You would be able to perform small gigs with this keyboard as the speakers are super high quality.

The Keys

The 61 keys are semi-weighted on the PSR-SX900. That being said, I found them super responsive when I was playing a ballad or hammering out a walking bass line. I feel the choice to have 61 keys as opposed to 88 was to be able to physically fit in the other features like the large-sized speakers. The good news is that you can transpose on this keyboard if you need a higher or lower octave similar to a full 88 keys keyboard.

I was surprised that this keyboard weighed just over 11 kilos! That is the main advantage of not having weighted keys. Having 61 keys makes it easy to put under your arm and load in and out of a rehearsal or studio space. This is impressive when you consider all the added features like loop pedal, effects, and speakers.

The sounds

Although the piano sounds are what you would expect from Yamaha, I was blown away by the keyboard sounds! Especially the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer. It is very difficult to get these 2 keyboards to sound legitimate but the PSR-SX900 has surpassed my expectations.

The drum sounds are also very authentic which is great for jamming along with or recording your own songs.

With over 1300 sounds and 56 drum kits, you will never be uninspired when creating on this keyboard!

Extra features

The loop pedal built-in feature is the icing on the cake. Many companies sell these pedals separately, so it was a nice bonus for the PSR-SX900 to have it on board. So many artists today, like Ed Sheeran use loop pedals in their live shows. It is such a great way to create on the spot.

For students, it is an amazing tool to be able to jam over a 4-bar chord progression. Being able to sample in stereo sound also makes whatever songs you create sound high quality and professional.

The Menu

Having a touchscreen menu seems like a necessity in a world where nearly everything is a touchscreen. I felt the 7-inch screen was the perfect size to help navigate through the different menu settings. It is super user-friendly and makes it simple to go from recording function to instrument mode.

Notable features

This is the perfect keyboard for a singer/songwriter. Being able to connect a microphone through the keyboard is excellent for live shows. If you are a solo performer, being able to create harmonies on your vocals through the PSR-SX900 will give more depth to your shows regarding backing vocals.

The joystick controller is also amazing for pitch bending. This is a great keyboard for professional musicians at a great price. Being a complete workstation means you won’t have to upgrade in the future.
